General Troubleshooting Tips About Barcode Scanners KidCheck is flexible enough to work with any USB barcode scanner. Our recommended scanner is the Symbol LS2208 model as it is good quality, reliable, and relatively inexpensive. This particular scanner is also sold under the brands Wasp, Hewlett Packard, and Motorola with the same model number. If you are planning to purchase a barcode scanner other than the LS2208, we recommend that you do not purchase CCD scanners. While they are less expensive, they often don't read well and can cause frustration with parents trying to use them. Laser scanners are preferable. All scanners must be set for Keyboard Emulation and a carriage return to work properly with KidCheck. I scan a barcode and it "beeps" but nothing happens Your scanner is likely not programmed for a carriage return. Symbol LS2208 scanners are not set for a carriage return by default when they are shipped from the factory. You can easily program it yourself by downloading the Symbol LS2208 Programming Guide here, and printing it. Once it's printed, simply follow the instructions on the guide and scan the programming barcodes in their proper order. If you have a scanner other than the Symbol LS2208, you will need to find the appropriate programming guide for your particular model online. I followed the instructions in the programming guide and it still doesn't work There may be some residual configuration that is preventing the scanner from working properly. In the owners manual for your Symbol LS2208 scanner is a barcode that resets the scanner to factory defaults. Scan that barcode to reset the scanner and then scan the barcodes in the programming guide again.
