Five Ways to Save Money When Improving Child Safety
Prioritizing child safety in your organization is a big job! Whether you’re a small, mid-sized, or large group, the expectation always exists of doing more with less, and that includes tightening the budget.
Improving child safety doesn’t have to be costly, and there are several ways you can even save some money while making the needed changes.
Here are five ways to save.
- Ask those applying to work directly with children to pay for their own background check – This comes up often and is an excellent way to gauge someone’s interest and commitment to the program. People who understand the process of gaining access to children usually have no issue with paying the $10-$20 to complete the check.
- Leverage resources within your organization for needed training or services – Check to see if there are professionals or people with specific skills that would volunteer to help with CPR training, screening volunteers, security team development, and other essential functions.
- Utilize multi-use technology – This means to leverage technology solutions that help manage several tasks, not just one. An example would be an electronic children’s check-in system. A solid check-in and out solution should be able to communicate effectively with parents and volunteers, provide custom reports for quicker decision making, increase child safety, and include a mobile option.
- Share resources and costs across the organization – This applies to everything from snacks, art supplies, communication devices such as walkie-talkie’s, apps, and first-aid supplies. If your organization serves children, ask your counter-parts on the pre-teen and youth side if they would like to share expenses for commonly used items. This will help their budget too.
- Take advantage of “free” resource offerings – Which include blogs, video series, safety tools, eBooks, webinars, and social media groups. Many of these resources can help with the day-to-day management, leadership development, and increase understanding in areas such as child protection.
